The IPL salary cap, team purse, retention slots and auction rules make up the operating manual the ten franchises work from every year. The rules evolve each mega-auction cycle and were last reset meaningfully ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Here is a clear 2026-27 explainer covering the team purse, retention numbers, Right to Match cards, the impact player rule and how uncapped player contracts work.

Team purse and overall cap

The IPL salary cap is the total auction spend each franchise is allowed across their squad. For the IPL 2025 mega-auction cycle the cap was set at around INR 146 crore per team, up meaningfully from earlier cycles. The total player compensation cap, which includes the auction purse plus incentive payments and performance bonuses, is higher again at the BCCI-approved ceiling.

For IPL 2026, the cap operates within the current mega-auction cycle that began with IPL 2025, so franchises work within that same ceiling subject to any annual increment the BCCI approves. The exact increment for 2026 is published by the BCCI in the final auction package ahead of the mini-auction window.

Retention rules

Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction, each franchise was allowed to retain up to six players in total, split across retention pre-auction and Right to Match cards used at the auction table. The break-up permitted a maximum of five capped players, with specific slot-based purse deductions for each retention slot.

For example, a franchise's first retention deducted the highest amount from its purse, the second retention a smaller amount, and so on. Uncapped player retentions carried a lower deduction, which is the provision that allowed Chennai Super Kings to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped retention, having retired from international cricket.

Right to Match cards

The Right to Match card is the franchise's tool to reclaim a player at the auction. If a player was released by the franchise but not pre-retained, the team can use an RTM card to match the highest bid at the auction table and bring the player back. The number of RTM cards per franchise is set each cycle by the BCCI, and was tied to how many pre-auction retentions the franchise had used.

Under the IPL 2025 rules, the RTM process also included a pre-match bid bump step, where the team making the original high bid could raise their bid once if the franchise signalled intent to match, before the original franchise had the final say.

Impact Player rule

The Impact Player rule allows each team to swap in one designated player from the bench during a match. The swap can be made at the start of an innings, at the fall of a wicket, or at the end of an over. The rule is currently in operation and is a major strategic lever for the IPL in the modern era. Its impact is particularly felt in the longer batting orders fielded by franchises and in the bowling unit composition decisions.

The BCCI reviews the rule each season, and team strategies for using the Impact Player vary from franchise to franchise.

Uncapped player contracts

Uncapped players, typically those who have not played international cricket in a defined recent window, carry different purse rules. The base price caps are lower and the purse impact on retention is reduced. The rule is intentionally designed to keep experienced India cricketers, particularly domestic stars who are not currently in the national setup, available to IPL franchises at reasonable cost.

The MS Dhoni retention by CSK under the uncapped player rule is the best-known example of how this provision works in practice.
