IPL 2026 Team Valuations: Franchise Rankings and Forbes Analysis

The IPL has grown from a startup league in 2008 to one of the world's most valuable sports properties. Leading estimates from Forbes, Brand Finance and D and P Advisory now place the ten IPL franchises collectively in the range of eleven to twelve billion US dollars, with the most valuable clubs worth over a billion each. Here is the 2026 team valuations analysis with what drives each franchise's market worth.
How IPL franchises are valued
Sports franchise valuations blend three components. First is the enterprise value, which reflects the discounted future cash flows from central revenue pool distributions and matchday income. Second is the brand value, which captures the premium attached to the name, logo and fan base. Third is the strategic value, which accounts for comparable sale prices in the same market.
For IPL franchises the biggest driver of all three is the central pool, dominated by the BCCI's media rights income. Each of the ten franchises receives an equal share of that central pool under the current arrangements, which means that even a weak-performing franchise has a large baseline revenue. On top of that comes sponsorship, gate revenue, merchandise and franchise-specific IP income.
The top of the valuation table
Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are consistently ranked as the two most valuable IPL franchises in every major listing. CSK has unmatched fan loyalty tied to MS Dhoni's legacy, the best matchday engagement at Chepauk, and a deep merchandise and sponsorship book. MI have five titles, the Ambani ownership umbrella of Reliance, and a global multi-team structure across South Africa, the UAE and the US through Reliance Industries' cricket holdings.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru ranks close behind on the strength of their brand reach, the Virat Kohli effect, and 2024 women's and 2025 men's title runs that monetised their audience like never before. KKR, backed by the Shah Rukh Khan-Juhi Chawla-Mehta partnership and a recent IPL 2024 title, round out the top tier of billion-dollar-plus valuations.
The middle and growing tier
Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings sit in the next tier. DC benefit from the JSW Group and GMR Group's media reach. RR have one of the best scouting and data operations in the league and a stable investor base. SRH have strong sponsorship around the Sun Group media umbrella. PBKS have been working on brand revival after fresh investment rounds.
Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, the two newest franchises added in 2022 after paying record entry fees of INR 7,090 crore and INR 5,625 crore respectively, have moved up the valuation ladder faster than any previous new franchise. GT's 2022 title and consistent playoff appearances have boosted their numbers significantly.
What moves valuations up or down
Three factors move a franchise's valuation more than anything else. First, a long-term title contender is worth materially more than a bottom-half team because of deeper playoff revenue, sponsor premiums and higher merchandise throughput. Second, a star-driven brand, whether that is Dhoni, Kohli, Rohit or a new-generation superstar, can swing valuation by double-digit percentages. Third, the central media rights cycle sets a floor. When a new rights deal is signed, every franchise's valuation resets upward.
Outlook into the next rights cycle
By the time the 2028-32 media rights cycle is finalised, analysts expect franchise valuations to rise a further 25 to 40 percent in real terms if the next rights deal grows similarly to the 2022 auction. A new IPL franchise auction, if and when the BCCI decides to expand further, would likely set the benchmark at well above INR 10,000 crore for a new entry.
