Ahmedabad Narendra Modi Stadium Pitch Report BGT 2027: Red-Ball

The Narendra Modi Stadium at Motera is the most variable Test surface in India. Two recent BGT Tests at Motera have produced wildly different pitches: the 2023 Test was a road-flat draw, and the 2024 Test was a result-Test with sharp turn from day two. For the BGT 2027 5th Test (provisionally February 21-25, 2027), the surface character depends almost entirely on the Gujarat Cricket Association curator's brief, which in turn depends on the BCCI's WTC qualification arithmetic at that point in the cycle.
This guide is for red-ball Test cricket specifically. The Motera IPL T20 surface โ short boundaries by Test standards, dew at night, and a high-scoring batting environment โ is a separate beast. For the IPL T20 reads at Motera, see our Narendra Modi pitch report IPL 2026 and the Narendra Modi Stadium batting/bowling profile.
Pitch character at a glance
- Surface type: Red soil with patchy black-soil mix; variable from match to match
- Pace and bounce: Medium; better carry than Pune, less than Wankhede
- Turn: Variable โ flat-as-a-road or sharp turn, depending on curator brief
- Reverse swing: Reliable from over 35 onwards if the surface offers abrasion
- Toss preference: Bat first wins 4 of 6 recent Tests at Motera
- First-innings par: 380-450 (with very high variance)

Day-by-day red-ball behaviour
Day 1: Hard, true, batting-friendly
The Motera day-one surface is, in 4 of the last 6 Tests, genuinely flat. The pitch is hard, the bounce is true, and the new ball offers minimal seam movement after the first 8 overs. First-innings 400+ is the realistic ambition.
What plays:
- Pace with the new ball: A 25-minute swing window if there is any morning haze.
- Pace once the swing window closes: Hard lengths offer limited assistance.
- Spin: Holding option only. Drift, no grip.
Par day-one score: 300-340 for 3-4 wickets. A team batting first to 400+ is in a strong position. 450+ is series-winning territory.
Day 2: Variable response
This is where the Motera Test pitch becomes unpredictable. Either:
- Scenario A: The road continues. Surface remains good; spin grip arrives only by tea.
- Scenario B: Sharp grip arrives early. Day two morning sees the off-spinner gripping; the surface has been left dry by the curator.
Reading the curator's brief on the morning of day one is essential. A grass-cover above 4mm suggests Scenario A; below that suggests B.
Day 3: Decisive (if Scenario B); inconclusive (if Scenario A)
If the surface is breaking up, day three is the decisive day โ spinners dominate, footmarks open, and the result is on. If the surface is flat, day three is more of the same: high scores, slow attrition, and a draw becoming the dominant outcome.
Day 4: The variable-bounce window
By day four, even the flat-as-a-road Motera surface produces some variable bounce on the cracks. The reverse-swing window for the older ball is sharper than at most other Indian venues because the Motera outfield is genuinely abrasive.
Par fourth-innings chase: 280+ is achievable on a flat surface; below 240 if the surface has gripped.
Day 5: Endurance vs deterioration
If the Test reaches day five, the surface is dust-on-top with cracks. The team trying to save the match needs patience above runs. Modern Motera Tests have a 50-50 split between results by day four and Tests reaching day five.
Recent Test history at Motera
- 2021 vs England (day-night): India won by 10 wickets in 2 days. Pitch rated 'average' despite the 2-day finish.
- 2021 vs England (red-ball, immediately after): India won by an innings and 25 runs.
- 2023 vs Australia (BGT 4th Test): Drawn. Flat surface; high scores; rated 'average'.
- 2024 vs England: India won by an innings and 64 runs. Sundar 7 wickets in the match.
Cumulative ledger:
- First-innings average score: ~410 (highest among likely BGT 2027 venues, due to Motera flatness)
- Wickets per Test: 32 (lowest among likely BGT 2027 venues)
- Spin wicket share: 58%
- Pace wicket share: 42%
Turn vs bounce ratio
- Turn: 5-7/10 (variable; depends on curator brief)
- Bounce: 6/10 (medium)
- Pace: 5/10 (medium)
- Carry: 6/10 (medium)
Motera's defining characteristic is variability. The surface can play like a Wankhede (high bounce, reverse swing) or like a flat road that produces a draw. Read the morning briefing.
What plays vs spin (essential for BGT 2027)
If Motera plays as a flat surface (most likely outcome on day one), Australian batting against spin is a non-issue โ Smith and Head will both go past 50, and the first-innings score will be 400+.
If Motera plays as a turning surface (less likely but possible if the BCCI brief is for a result-pitch):
Strategies that work:
- Premeditated sweep against the rough: Travis Head's preferred method.
- Use the depth of crease: Smith's preferred method.
- Drive on the up before grip arrives: The day-one method that works on flat surfaces.
Strategies that fail:
- Defend on the back foot to the turning ball: Inside-edges and bat-pads.
- Stay leg-side of the line: Drift back into the right-hander's pads finds an LBW.
Fantasy XI advice
Captain / vice-captain pool:
- Steve Smith (Motera flatness gives him his most likely Indian century opportunity)
- Travis Head (counter-attack 100 plausible on day one)
- Yashasvi Jaiswal (Motera day one is the most batting-friendly first day of the BGT)
- Ravindra Jadeja (only spinner with a guaranteed bowling volume)
Bowling stack:
- 2 Indian seamers (Bumrah, Akash Deep) for reverse swing
- 2 spinners (Jadeja, Lyon) for variability hedge
- 1 Australian seamer (Cummins)
Batting stack:
- All four Australian top-order batters (Khawaja, Konstas, Labuschagne, Smith) โ Motera flatness rewards top-order patience.
- All five Indian top-order batters.
Avoid:
- Wrist-spinners as captain (Kuldeep's wicket count is hard to project at Motera)
- Wicketkeeper-batters as captain unless Pant is in extreme form
- Lower-order Australian batters (Carey at 7 is the exception)
Pitch curator's likely brief
After two contrasting recent Tests, the Gujarat Cricket Association curator has flexibility in 2027. The variable: WTC final qualification math at the time of the 5th Test.
- If India have already qualified for the WTC final: Expect a flat road and a draw โ the BCCI will not want to risk a sub-3-day Test in a dead rubber.
- If India still need a result: Expect a turning surface like the 2024 Sundar match.
- If Australia need a result: The curator brief is up to the BCCI; a flat surface that gives Australia's top order a chance is a possibility.
Motera in the BGT 2027 storyline
The 5th Test at Motera is, by reputation, the closing-Test stage. If the trophy is decided, the Test becomes a swansong fixture for the Australian core (Cummins, Smith, Lyon) in their last BGT in India. If the trophy is undecided going in, the surface character will reflect WTC qualification arithmetic and BCCI strategy.
Either way, Motera in late February closes the Indian Test summer. The next major series is England's tour, which begins in early March 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Motera Test pitch turn from day one? No, almost never. Day one at Motera is genuinely flat in most recent Tests. Spin grip arrives variably โ sometimes from day two, sometimes only from day three.
How is a Motera Test pitch different from the IPL T20 pitch? The Test surface is firmer, with a different soil top, different grass roll, and no dew impact. The T20 pitch is shorter-boundary, dew-affected at night, and pure batter-friendly. Two profoundly different surfaces despite the same ground.
What is a par first-innings score at Motera in a Test? 380-450. Motera day one is the most batting-friendly first day among likely BGT 2027 Indian venues. A team batting first to 450+ is heavily favoured.
Will the 5th Test be a result Test or a draw? That depends on the curator's brief. The 2023 Motera Test was a draw; the 2024 fixture was a result. Either is plausible in 2027.
Is Bumrah's record good at Motera? Yes, but less so than at Wankhede. The Motera surface offers reverse swing reliably from over 35, but the slower deck reduces wobble-seam variance.
The BGT 2027 closes at the largest cricket stadium in the world. The pitch character will tell us by the morning of day one whether we are headed for a result or a draw.
