Strike Rate vs Economy Rate in Cricket: Formula & Use

Cricket has two core efficiency numbers: strike rate for batters and economy rate for bowlers. Both answer the same question from opposite sides: how fast are runs being scored, relative to the deliveries available?
What is batting strike rate?
Batting strike rate = (runs scored / balls faced) × 100. It measures runs per 100 balls and is the single most important T20 batting metric. A strike rate of 150 means 150 runs per 100 balls.
What is bowling economy rate?
Bowling economy rate = runs conceded / overs bowled. It measures runs conceded per over. A 6.5 economy means 6.5 runs given away per over.
Formula examples
- Batter: 60 runs off 40 balls → SR = 150
- Bowler: 28 runs in 4 overs → economy = 7.0
T20 benchmarks
See our T20 batting strike rate benchmarks explained for positional norms. For bowling, anything under 7.5 in T20 is excellent; under 8.5 is solid.
Why both matter in Dream11
Strike rate and economy directly feed Dream11 points — batters earn bonus points for SR above 120/170, bowlers earn bonus for economy under 5/6/7.
Strike rate vs average — which is more important?
Average tells you if someone gets out quickly. Strike rate tells you what their runs cost. In T20, strike rate is more decisive than average.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good strike rate in T20 cricket?
150+ is excellent. 120-149 is solid. Below 100 is generally too slow for T20.
What is a good economy rate in IPL?
Under 7.5 is excellent. 7.5-9.0 is competitive. Above 9.5 is concerning at death overs specifically.
Is strike rate more important than batting average in T20?
Yes — in T20 the ball is finite, so runs per ball matters more than runs per dismissal.
How do I calculate strike rate quickly?
Divide runs by balls, then multiply by 100. For 60 off 40: 60/40 = 1.5, × 100 = 150.
What is current run rate vs strike rate?
Current run rate (CRR) is runs per over for the whole team. Strike rate is runs per 100 balls for an individual. See our CRR explainer.
