PSL 2027 expansion seven-team talk PCB calendar window

The Pakistan Cricket Board is in active discussion on expanding the PSL to seven teams from the 2027 cycle. The proposed expansion would add one new franchise to the existing six-team structure, with the calendar window slated for March-April and the broadcaster pressure pushing for a clearer resolution of the SA20 overlap. The franchise valuations for the existing six teams are under review, and the new-franchise tender is expected to be published in mid-2026.
Fixture grid
PSL 2027 in the expanded seven-team format would run from the third week of March 2027 through the third week of April, a five-week block that is slightly longer than the current four-week schedule. Each team would play the other six teams in a single round-robin format, giving 21 league fixtures plus the four-match playoff phase. The total fixture count would be 25 matches, up from the current 22. The home-and-away principle remains, with each franchise hosting at least three league games at a home venue. The principal venues are Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar, with the new franchise's home venue subject to the tender process. The final is provisionally scheduled for the third week of April at Karachi or Lahore.
Why it is unusual
The PSL expansion to seven teams is the first significant structural change to the league since the six-team format was established in 2016. The expansion has been on the PCB agenda for several years, with the previous management resisting the change on the grounds that the existing six-team structure was working commercially. The new PCB leadership has reversed that position based on three considerations. First, the broadcaster has been pushing for more fixtures to feed the increased rights value. Second, the franchise interest from new markets has been strong, with multiple bidders signalling intent to participate in the tender. Third, the wider regional context has been the growth of SA20 and ILT20, which has put PSL under competitive pressure to grow rather than stand still. The franchise-valuation review is the parallel process that will determine how much the existing franchises are worth as the league expands.
Scheduling tension
The biggest scheduling tension is with the SA20, which has its own window in January-February but has been pushing into March in recent draft schedules. The PSL calendar starting in mid-March means that any SA20 extension into March will create direct overlap with PSL fixtures. The PCB has been in active discussion with CSA to maintain the window separation, but a binding agreement is yet to be confirmed. The other scheduling tension is with the bilateral cricket calendar. Pakistan have a busy bilateral schedule across early 2027, and the senior players who are PSL-contracted will have demanding workloads through the period. The release-and-return framework with the senior team is being finalised. See our England tour Pakistan Multan preview.
Who benefits and who loses
The existing franchises that benefit from the expansion are those with strong commercial standing and squad depth. Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars are well-positioned to maintain market share even as the league expands, because both have established brand identities and large supporter bases. The franchises that face the challenge are the smaller-market teams, because the seventh franchise will compete for player attention and broadcaster slots. The wider effect on Pakistan cricket is positive, with the expanded league giving more players consistent franchise opportunities and creating a larger talent pool for the senior national team. The new franchise itself is the major beneficiary if the tender process attracts strong bids and a clear identity emerges. What to watch
Three things to watch through the development. First, the franchise-tender process. The new-franchise tender is expected in mid-2026, and the winning bid will determine the seventh team's identity, home venue, and ownership structure. Second, the SA20 window negotiations. The PCB is in active discussion with CSA on maintaining the window separation, and a binding agreement will need to be in place before the PSL 2027 fixture sheet is published. Third, the franchise-valuation review for the existing six teams. The review may affect ownership structures and force some franchises to refresh their commercial models in response. The wider effect on global T20 league cricket is on the calendar competition. The PSL expansion adds to the global T20 league count, and the player-availability constraints across cycles will tighten further.
