India tour New Zealand for three Tests in early 2027, the start of the 2027-29 WTC cycle for both nations. The series runs from January 14 to February 7, 2027, with Tests at Bay Oval (Tauranga), Hagley Oval (Christchurch), and Basin Reserve (Wellington). The series follows the 2024 home-series rotation: NZ hosts the Tests in their southern-summer high-cricket window. Here is the day-1 timings, weather context, ticket release dates, and the venue-specific tactical notes.
Test 1: Bay Oval, Tauranga (January 14-18, 2027)
Day 1: Thursday January 14. Start time 11:00 am New Zealand Daylight Time (NZDT). Toss 10:30 am. Gates open 9:00 am. Lunch 1:00-1:40 pm. Tea 3:40-4:00 pm. Stumps approximately 6:00 pm with overs make-up potential to 6:30 pm.
Bay Oval is the second-newest of the three Test venues. It typically offers seam-friendly conditions in the morning, with the pitch flattening through the day. The Bay of Plenty area sees marine moisture overnight that adds to first-session swing. Day 1 morning at Bay Oval is the most pace-bowler-friendly Test session of any New Zealand venue.
Weather forecast as of May 18, 2026: predictions are early but historical data suggests 60% probability of full-day play across days 1 through 4, with day 5 risk increasing. Marine fog risk at 7:00 to 9:00 am on days 1 and 2 may delay starts by 15-30 minutes.
Test 2: Hagley Oval, Christchurch (January 22-26, 2027)
Day 1: Friday January 22. Start time 11:00 am NZDT. Same session windows as Bay Oval.
Hagley Oval is the most picturesque of the three venues, set on the Hagley Park edge. The pitch is faster than Bay Oval and tends to favour pace bowlers across all five days. Tim Southee retired from Tests in 2025 but Trent Boult's late-career return on home soil at Hagley is a real possibility for this series (NZC has signalled openness to Boult on a series-by-series basis from 2026).
For Indian batters, Hagley's breeze pattern is important. The Hagley Park afternoon north-easterly increases seam movement after lunch. India's 2018 Hagley Test featured all 20 wickets to pace; the 2027 surface will be similar.
Test 3: Basin Reserve, Wellington (February 3-7, 2027)
Day 1: Wednesday February 3. Start time 11:00 am NZDT. Same session windows.
The Basin Reserve is the historic Test venue of New Zealand cricket and offers the most varied pitch of the three. The Wellington wind is the defining tactical variable; the southerly can swing the ball significantly in the afternoon session. The Cook Strait location means weather can change within a session, with rain delays sometimes lasting only 20 minutes before play resumes.
The Basin's capacity is approximately 11,500. Tickets at the Basin sell out faster than Bay Oval or Hagley for India Tests; the New Zealand cricket fan base has a particular affection for the Basin and Indian diaspora attendance is high.
Ticket release windows and pricing
Bay Oval Test tickets released October 15, 2026. Standard NZD 35, premium NZD 75, hospitality NZD 220. Day 5 tickets sold separately as flex tickets at NZD 40.
Hagley Test tickets released October 20, 2026. Standard NZD 40, premium NZD 80, hospitality NZD 250. Day 5 flex tickets at NZD 45.
Basin Reserve Test tickets released October 25, 2026. Standard NZD 45, premium NZD 90, hospitality NZD 300 (the most expensive of the three because of capacity constraints). Day 5 flex tickets at NZD 50.
International fan tickets through New Zealand Cricket fan portal include a NZD 8 facilitation fee. Refund policy: rain-cancelled days refunded at 70% of face value after deduction of admin fee.
Travel and accommodation
Bay Oval: nearest airport is Tauranga, but most international fans fly to Auckland (3 hours by road) or Hamilton (1.5 hours by road) and drive. Hotels in Mount Maunganui (5 minutes from ground) and Tauranga CBD are the closest. Average mid-range hotel: NZD 180-250 per night during Test week.
Hagley: nearest airport is Christchurch (15 minutes from ground). Hotels in the CBD or near Hagley Park itself. Average mid-range: NZD 200-280 per night.
Basin Reserve: nearest airport is Wellington (15 minutes from ground). Hotels in Mount Cook (5 minutes walk) and Te Aro. Average mid-range: NZD 220-320 per night (Wellington is the most expensive of the three for Test-week accommodation).
What to expect tactically
New Zealand pitches reward fast bowlers who can swing the ball both ways and hit the seam consistently. India's pacers (Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep) are the wicket-taking unit. Ravichandran Ashwin's 2025 retirement decision means Ravindra Jadeja is the lead spinner.
For New Zealand, the bowling lead is Matt Henry, Will O'Rourke, and Ben Sears with Mitchell Santner as the spinner. Bay Oval and Hagley both favour pace; the Basin Reserve's spin component depends on the surface preparation.
What it means
Three Tests across three weeks in three distinct New Zealand venues. India's 2024-25 home dominance against NZ (a 3-0 sweep) is the recent memory; the 2027 series in NZ conditions will test India's travelling Test side. Ticket sales open in October 2026 for traveling fans. Plan around the Basin Reserve's ticket scarcity. The series opens the new WTC 2027-29 cycle for both nations. Watch the Hagley Test for the pace-bowling masterclass.
