IPL 2026 Highest-Paid Death Bowlers — Top 10 by Salary

IPL 2026 highest-paid death bowlers ranked by salary — Bumrah, Cummins, Starc, Arshdeep. Top 10 with their death-overs economy.

The death overs (17–20) are the most expensive bowling real estate in T20 cricket. A franchise that gives up 14 in over 18 has lost the match more often than not. The top death bowlers are paid accordingly — six of the top 10 highest-paid death specialists in IPL 2026 earn above ₹10 crore. This is the salary-by-role list, with each contract's mid-season death-overs delivery.

What Counts as a "Death Bowler"

We include any bowler who has bowled 60%+ of his overs in IPL 2026 in the 17–20 phase, or whose franchise has bought him primarily for death duties. Borderline cases (e.g., Arshdeep is technically "PP + death" for PBKS) are included where 50%+ of their final-overs share is at the death.

#1 — Jasprit Bumrah (MI, ₹19.0 Cr)

The undisputed best death bowler in T20 cricket. Death economy 7.2 — three runs per over below the league death-overs average (10.5). 8 wickets at the death across 9 matches; 41 dot balls in the 17–20 phase. Bumrah at ₹19 Cr is below market for what he delivers.

#2 — Pat Cummins (SRH, ₹20.5 Cr)

Cummins' death economy of 9.1 isn't elite — it sits around league average — but he's also the captain, and he often takes the death overs because no one else can. The contract reflects total value (captaincy + 14 wickets + a batting bonus), not pure death-bowling ROI.

#3 — Mitchell Starc (DC, ₹11.75 Cr)

The cautionary tale. Death economy 11.2 — worst in the top 10 by a wide margin. Yorker accuracy has dropped sharply; he's serving up half-volleys at the death. The Auction Rater grade reflects how badly this signing has aged.

#4 — Kagiso Rabada (PBKS, ₹10.75 Cr)

Death econ 10.4 — slightly above league average. Rabada has been the second-fiddle to Arshdeep at PBKS for the death overs and the role split has worked: Arshdeep gets 18 and 20; Rabada gets 17 and 19.

#5 — Arshdeep Singh (PBKS, ₹18.0 Cr)

The key Indian death bowler in the league. Death economy 9.6, 7 wickets — including the 19-and-20 double-over assignment in 7 of 9 matches he's played. Iyer's PBKS has built around Arshdeep at the death and the formula has been working.

#6 — Trent Boult (RR, ₹12.5 Cr)

Boult's role is split: PP and death. His death economy of 8.8 is the second-best on the list (after Bumrah). For ₹12.5 Cr, RR is getting two specialist roles from one contract — auction's best value.

#7-10 — Mid-Tier Death Specialists

Mohammed Siraj (GT) at ₹12.25 Cr: 9.4 death econ, fair value. Avesh Khan (LSG) at ₹9.75 Cr: 11.8 death econ — D-grade contract performance. Ferguson and Deshpande are role players the analytics teams flagged but neither has hit the breakout phase.

ROI Analysis — Best Value at the Death

PlayerDeath EconSalarySalary per Wicket
Bumrah7.2₹19 Cr₹2.4 Cr
Boult8.8₹12.5 Cr₹2.1 Cr
Arshdeep9.6₹18 Cr₹2.6 Cr
Siraj9.4₹12.25 Cr₹2.5 Cr
Cummins9.1₹20.5 Cr₹3.4 Cr

Boult is the auction's best ₹/wicket at the death. Cummins is paying a captaincy premium that distorts the per-wicket math.

  • Average top-10 death-bowler salary rose from ₹9.1 Cr (2024) → ₹13.5 Cr (2026), a 48% increase
  • Yorker percentage at the death has actually dropped league-wide (from 38% in 2024 to 31% in 2026); bowlers are leaning more on slower balls and back-of-length cutters
  • Indian-only death bowlers are at 4 of top 10; in 2023 it was 7 of 10. The market is tilting overseas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Bumrah so much better than the rest?

A career of 1,000+ death-overs balls bowled with the highest-yorker accuracy and slowest-ball variation in the world. The next-best is Boult, but Boult doesn't have Bumrah's death dot-ball machine.

What's the league-average death economy?

10.5 in IPL 2026 — slightly worse than 9.9 in 2025. Death batting has improved as more teams use Impact Player to accelerate.

Why doesn't the model rate Maxwell as a death bowler?

He bowls only 1.4 overs per match, mostly middle-overs. The role threshold (60% of overs at death) excludes him.

Is Starc's drop permanent?

Could be. He's 36, has been on the injury list, and the velocity drop on his yorker is detectable on broadcast. DC's release decision will tell us in November.

Best Dream11 captain pick from this list?

Bumrah. The economy and wicket combination produces 100+ fantasy points more often than any other death bowler.
