The Powerplay is where IPL 2026 is being won and lost. Teams averaging 65+ in overs 1-6 are winning 75% of their matches. Teams averaging under 50 are losing 70%. The leaderboard for the first six overs is, in effect, the leaderboard for the tournament.

At the mid-season mark, Philip Salt leads the Powerplay runs list with 298 runs at a strike rate above 185, and Arshdeep Singh leads the wickets list with 11 Powerplay wickets โ€” a near-franchise-record pace for the PBKS left-armer. All numbers cross-referenced against ESPNcricinfo IPL 2026 stats and IPLT20.com.

The ranking criteria

Powerplay = overs 1-6 only. Runs scored (or wickets taken) in any other phase of the innings don't count. Minimum qualification: 4 matches played. Top 10 in each category.

Salt at the top โ€” why it's not a surprise

Philip Salt's Powerplay dominance is the most valuable single feature of IPL 2026 so far. RCB's recipe is simple: Salt goes hard in overs 1-6, Kohli anchors, and by the end of the PP, RCB are 65+/0 or 65+/1 virtually every match. His 78 off 36 vs MI included 62 runs in the Powerplay โ€” effectively a solo PP demolition.

Travis Head (SRH) and Abhishek Sharma (SRH) combined for a 101-run opening stand vs RR and remain the IPL's most destructive left-hand PP pair.

Arshdeep at the top โ€” the PBKS story

Arshdeep Singh's 11 Powerplay wickets in 6 matches is close to an IPL record pace. He's getting movement with the new ball, yorking left-handers, and โ€” crucially โ€” bowling the first over in every PBKS match. That's a 6-over allocation more heavily weighted toward the PP than almost any other Indian seamer.

Pair that with Prabhsimran Singh's Powerplay run-scoring at the top of the innings, and you have the fundamental reason PBKS are top of the IPL 2026 points table. For the full squad context, see our PBKS squad analysis.

Cummins, Bumrah, Boult โ€” the experienced heads

Three things stand out about the PP wicket-takers:

  1. Cummins is bowling the first over for SRH and taking wickets, which is why SRH's Powerplays have been competitive despite middle-order inconsistency.
  2. Bumrah has 8 PP wickets in 5 matches โ€” the best strike rate of any PP bowler in IPL 2026. MI's problem is everything that happens after he leaves the attack.
  3. Trent Boult's 8 wickets is the quietly underrated story. The left-armer is bowling at MI's best Powerplay economy in three seasons.

Tactical implications

Three live takeaways for fantasy players and betting-line analysts:

  • Always captain a PP specialist on a fresh pitch. Salt, Head, and Fraser-McGurk have the highest fantasy-point ceiling in overs 1-6.
  • Avoid middle-over bowlers for captain picks. The IPL 2026 wickets distribution is heavily weighted to PP + death โ€” very few bowlers are averaging 2+ wickets between overs 7-15.
  • Left-handers are being targeted. Arshdeep, Cummins, and Bumrah have combined for 16 of their 28 PP wickets against left-handers. Teams with lefty-heavy tops (RR, SRH, DC) are more vulnerable.

What's next

Expect this leaderboard to shift through the rest of IPL 2026. Candidates to displace Salt: Abhishek Sharma on a hot run, Gill if GT's openers click. Candidates to displace Arshdeep: Bumrah if he plays full availability for the remaining matches.
