Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed the home international fixture grid for 2027-28, and it is the busiest year in five cycles. India, Australia, and Pakistan will all tour, with the Lanka Premier League slotted into the December window across the same year. The grid's structural design tries to balance broadcast revenue, player workload, and the LPL franchise calendar, and the resulting schedule deserves a careful read.

The headline tours

Three tours dominate the cycle: India in August-September 2027 for two Tests and three ODIs; Australia in October-November 2027 for two Tests and a limited-overs leg; and Pakistan in February-March 2028 for a Test series and a triangular T20I tournament. The fixture density means players in the SL squad will have international cricket in 11 of the 12 months of the cycle.

India tour structure

The India tour Tests will be played at Galle and the Sinhalese Sports Club Colombo. The Galle Test is the traditional series-opener, with the spin-friendly conditions that produce result Tests. The Colombo Test follows on a flatter surface. The three ODIs are split across the R. Premadasa Stadium, Pallekele, and Hambantota. The white-ball leg is the commercial centrepiece of the tour.

Australia tour structure

The Australia tour Tests are at Galle and Colombo, with the Galle Test the marquee fixture. Australia have historically struggled against spin in Sri Lankan conditions, and the Test fixture is one of the most anticipated of the WTC cycle. The limited-overs leg includes three ODIs and three T20Is, with venues split between R. Premadasa Stadium and Pallekele.

Pakistan tour structure

The Pakistan tour Test series is two matches at Galle and Colombo. The Pakistan limited-overs fixtures are part of a triangular T20I tournament that includes a third team (likely UAE or Afghanistan, to be confirmed). The triangular is an unusual format for Sri Lanka's home cricket and reflects the federation's ambition to host more multi-team fixtures.

The LPL overlap

The Lanka Premier League season 6 in December 2027 overlaps the tail end of the Australia tour. SLC has indicated that national-team commitments take priority and that the senior players will not be available for LPL franchises during the international fixtures. The LPL has scheduled around this constraint, with the marquee fixtures starting after the Australia tour concludes.

Galle's structural significance

Galle has produced more first-innings result Tests in Sri Lanka over the past 15 years than any other venue. The spin-friendly conditions and the historical record favour the home side. All three tours feature a Galle Test, and the venue's structural role in Sri Lankan home cricket has now been institutionalised.

Colombo Tests

The Sinhalese Sports Club and R. Premadasa Stadium will host the bulk of the Colombo Test fixtures. The Sinhalese Sports Club produces flatter wickets with reverse swing in the late evening, suiting Sri Lanka's seam attack and Test middle order. R. Premadasa Stadium hosts the white-ball fixtures and produces stronger crowd attendance for ODIs and T20Is.

Pallekele's spin-and-seam balance

Pallekele continues to be Sri Lanka's most balanced venue, producing conditions that suit both seam and spin. The venue will host two limited-overs fixtures across the year and is also the candidate for any neutral-venue fixtures. The federation has invested in venue infrastructure, and Pallekele's drainage and lighting have been upgraded.

Hambantota's role

Hambantota Stadium hosts one ODI fixture and serves as the secondary venue. The venue's southern location means lower attendance than Colombo or Pallekele, but the playing surface and the modern infrastructure have made it a credible international venue. The federation has been working to grow the Hambantota cricket-tourism market.

Women's programme

The Sri Lanka Women home programme for 2027-28 includes a multi-format series against Pakistan Women and an ODI bilateral against Bangladesh Women. The fixtures will be played at Pallekele and the Sinhalese Sports Club. The women's programme has grown over the past three years, with the federation investing in player development pathways.

Broadcast pathway

The 2027-28 broadcast rights have been allocated. Star Sports India holds the rights for the India tour, with parallel rights for the Australia and Pakistan tours. The local rights are with the SLC's long-standing partner network. The cricket will be available on streaming platforms in India through JioHotstar.

Travelling supporter pathway

Galle and Colombo are the primary destinations for travelling supporters, and accommodation can be tight during the marquee Test windows. The optimal accommodation windows are for the Pakistan tour in February-March 2028, when conditions are dry and the local tourism season is also peaking. Indian supporters often combine the Galle Test with a Sri Lanka leisure trip.

Player workload

The fixture density across the cycle is significant. The senior Sri Lanka squad will have international cricket for 11 of 12 months, including the LPL adjacency. SLC has indicated that the squad will be rotated where possible, with the senior players resting for the LPL window and for the limited-overs leg of the Pakistan tour.

What it means

Sri Lanka's 2027-28 home cricket grid is the most ambitious schedule the federation has built in five years. India, Australia, and Pakistan all touring in the same cycle is a commercially significant arrangement, and the LPL overlap creates a structural feature that the federation will manage carefully. The grid supports the federation's broader commercial and on-field ambitions for the WTC cycle.

What to watch

The Galle Test fixture against India in August 2027. The Australia Galle Test in October 2027. The Pakistan triangular tournament composition. And the LPL season 6 schedule, which has been quietly adjusted to accommodate the international cricket. The 2027-28 cycle will be one of the most-watched Sri Lankan home cricket years in a decade, and the grid is the structural feature that defines it.
