The PCB's decision to bring departmental teams back into the 2026-27 domestic season has split its own selection committee, and one selector's resignation note — circulated internally, never officially leaked — has become the document this row turns on. The board chairman has framed the move as a financial fix; the selectors who pushed back have framed it as a structural reversal that undoes seven years of regional consolidation. The PCB Board of Governors approved a hybrid first-class structure for 2026-27. The financial argument is real. Regional cricket in Pakistan operates on a deficit funded entirely by the PCB; departmental cricket funds itself through corporate sponsorships. The reintroduction of departmental teams reduces the PCB's domestic cricket budget by an estimated PKR 480 million per year.

The Resignation Note

A selection committee member — the most senior of the three on the dissenting side of the vote — circulated an internal note on April 30 announcing his resignation. The note has not been published. Two people who have read it confirm the resignation grounds: that the departmental track creates a parallel selection pipeline that the senior selectors cannot govern, and that the financial efficiency case has been overstated by 60 per cent against the actual savings.

The note also names the corporate sponsorship deals the dissenting selector believes are being protected. The PCB has not responded to the resignation publicly, and the selector has not been formally replaced. The committee continues with four members instead of five.
