South Africa remains the one major country India have never won a Test series in. That long-standing statistic hangs over every tour. The 2026-27 trip is a full-format assignment — Tests, ODIs and T20Is — across grounds that have historically held steady: Centurion, Newlands, the Wanderers and Kingsmead. Here is the preview.

Schedule and venues

Per the published ICC FTP and CSA planning window, India's tour of South Africa 2026-27 is expected to feature two or three Tests, three ODIs and three or four T20Is, spread across December 2026 and January 2027. Tests are likely to land at Centurion, Cape Town (Newlands) and either Johannesburg or Durban. ODIs and T20Is traditionally rotate through Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein and Paarl.

The South African summer (December-January) is cricket's peak window there, and CSA plans the major ticketed Test around the Boxing Day or New Year slot at Centurion or Newlands.

What is at stake

India's red-ball goal is simple — win the Test series. It has never been done. Shubman Gill's captaincy era, Bumrah's overseas record and the next generation of Test-match quicks make this the most credible assault India have mounted in years. South Africa come in with Temba Bavuma as Test captain and a strong home bowling attack.

In white-ball cricket, the T20Is are a World Cup 2026 look-back review (the tournament has concluded by then) and an immediate run-in for the next T20 cycle. ODIs are 2027 World Cup prep for both sides.

Key battles

Jasprit Bumrah vs Aiden Markram. Markram is South Africa's cleanest Test batter at the top of the order; Bumrah's wobble-seam into him is South African cricket's toughest question.

Kagiso Rabada vs Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rabada's nipping seam at 140+ kph on pace-friendly Centurion surfaces is exactly the test that reveals whether Jaiswal's overseas game is ready.

Keshav Maharaj vs Rishabh Pant. A modern Test contest — left-arm spin into a left-hander known for counter-attack. Pant's decision-making defines India's middle order in this series.

Gerald Coetzee vs India's top order. Coetzee has been SA's rising quick. His short ball into India's top three is the variable SA are banking on.

Pitch notes

Centurion bounces and carries all five days; Cape Town is the truest batting surface when the wind is friendly; Jo'burg is the fastest pitch on tour but degrades; Durban is the surface most resembling subcontinent conditions. White-ball grounds at Port Elizabeth and Paarl are typically high-scoring.

India's squad watch

Expect Gill as Test captain, Rohit Sharma in the discussion pending his red-ball future (he has stepped back from Tests, per public reporting), Jaiswal/Rahul opening, Pant keeping, Jadeja as all-rounder, and the Bumrah-Siraj-Akash Deep pace spine. Kuldeep is a key overseas spinner. Mukesh Kumar and Prasidh Krishna are the reserves most likely to get an overseas debut.

Prediction

South Africa remain slight favourites at home in Tests, particularly at Centurion. India's best chance is to split the series 1-1. In white-ball cricket, India go in as favourites given their squad depth.
