Papua New Guinea's cricket history has a small but devoted following at home and a growing one across the East Asia-Pacific region. The 2024 T20 World Cup was their first global appearance and they returned home as a team that had learned what international cricket looks like. The 2026 EAP Qualifier in Suva was the chance to push toward the 2028 T20 World Cup pathway. PNG beat Fiji by five wickets in the final at Albert Park on May 14, sealed the EAP regional spot, and now go through to the global qualifier in Hong Kong in February 2027. The win is more than a regional title.

Phase one: the Fiji innings

Fiji had been the surprise package of the EAP Qualifier. They beat Vanuatu in the semi-final by 18 runs and had Sanjay Lal's batting and Iliesa Tuilevu's left-arm seam as their match-winners. The final innings was a steady build — Fiji posted 138 for 7 in 20 overs after losing the toss and being inserted.

Sanjay Lal opened and made 32 off 28. The middle order was anchored by Mark Sorovaki at five who made 28 off 24. The death-overs hitting from Tuilevu (15 off 9) pushed Fiji from 110 in the 17th over to 138 in the 20th.

PNG's bowling unit kept the lid on. Norman Vanua took 2 for 19, Charles Amini (the captain) took 2 for 24, and the leg-spinner Damien Ravu took 2 for 28. The bowling balance was the kind of attack PNG have built over the last 18 months.

What the numbers say

PNG's chase of 139 was straightforward but careful. The 20-year-old opener Tony Ura made 47 off 38. Lega Siaka added 34 off 29 in the middle. The captain Charles Amini finished 21 not out off 14 to seal the chase in the 18th over.

The asking rate at the start was 6.95. By the powerplay it was 6.91. By the 12th over it was 7.21 (a small bump after the fall of Ura). By the 16th over it had dropped to 6.0 with Amini at the crease. The match was finished with eight balls to spare.

The T20 World Cup 2028 pathway

The 2026 EAP Qualifier was the first round of the global qualification pathway for the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. PNG's win sends them to the global qualifier in Hong Kong in February 2027. At the global qualifier 14 teams will compete for four spots in the 2028 main draw.

The other automatic qualifiers from the regional rounds — Africa, Asia, Americas, Europe — will also be at Hong Kong. PNG will be matched up against teams like Scotland, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Nepal, USA, and Namibia in the global qualifier. The historical record suggests PNG can reach the play-off stage at a 14-team event.

What it means for PNG cricket

PNG's ICC funding cycle is tied to qualification rounds. Each global qualifier appearance brings a tier-up in funding from the ICC. The 2024 T20 World Cup brought PNG into the second tier of Associate funding, and the 2026 EAP Qualifier win extends that.

The cricket-development chain in PNG is small. The national academy at Port Moresby produces about 60 contracted players a year. The top 22 of those have central contracts. The Charles Amini captaincy era — he took over in 2023 — has focused on building a settled XI rather than developing depth. The Suva win is the validation.

For Charles Amini personally, the EAP title is his first ICC silverware. The 33-year-old left-hander has played 87 T20Is and averaged 24 with the bat and 25 with the ball. He's the most experienced cricketer in the PNG dressing room and the one who carries the strategy.

What it means for Fiji cricket

Fiji's final appearance is the first time the country has reached a regional ICC qualifier final. The 2026 EAP Qualifier confirms that Fiji is the second-tier of EAP behind PNG, ahead of Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, and Samoa. The win pathway from the EAP region remains tight — there is one direct slot to the global qualifier and Fiji didn't take it.

The Fiji squad will need to find a permanent home venue. Albert Park in Suva is a multi-sport venue and the practice facilities are shared with rugby league. The Fiji Cricket Association is building a dedicated cricket facility at Lautoka, due to open in 2027.

The forward view

PNG's next major event is the global qualifier in Hong Kong in February 2027. Before that they have a bilateral T20I series against Nepal in November 2026 and a quadrangular tournament with USA, Canada, and Scotland in late January.

Fiji's next major event is the 2027 EAP rounds. They will need to maintain their position above Vanuatu to stay on the qualification ladder.

What to watch next: PNG vs Nepal T20I series in November 2026 — the first warm-up before the global qualifier in Hong Kong.
