Afghanistan vs SL 2nd ODI Kandy — Rashid Khan 5/27 Spell Decoded

Rashid Khan has been the world's best T20 leg-spinner for nine years. His ODI numbers have always been quieter — career economy of 4.21 and a wicket every 41 balls. The Kandy ODI on May 16 was the kind of ODI spell that reshapes those numbers. Rashid bowled 10 overs for 27 runs and took five wickets, all of them from the middle order. Afghanistan went 2-0 up in the ODI series and the wrong'un that had been his variation in the T20 format became the matchwinner in 50-over cricket.
Phase one: the surface and the plan
Pallekele had played true. Kandy at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium had more grip from the surface. The Afghanistan brief was to attack with spin from over 8 to 35 — the slot where Sri Lanka's middle order has historically been weakest. Rashid was given the responsibility.
Afghanistan posted 256 for 9 batting first, with Rahmat Shah making 67 off 81 and Mohammad Nabi 41 not out off 28. The total was 30 below par for the venue. The bowling unit needed to defend it through control rather than wicket-taking. Rashid's spell was the key.
What the numbers say
Rashid's 5 for 27 broke into a clear pattern. Overs 1-2 in the powerplay: 4 runs, no wickets. Overs 3-5 in the middle: 8 runs, two wickets. Overs 6-8: 6 runs, two wickets. Overs 9-10 at the death: 9 runs, one wicket.
The economy of 2.7 was the lowest by him in any ODI in five years. The strike rate of one wicket every 12 balls was the highest of his ODI career. The wrong'un percentage in the spell was 51 — significantly higher than his career mark of 38. He used the variation as the wicket-taker.
The matchups against Karunaratne and Mendis
Dimuth Karunaratne has been Sri Lanka's most consistent top-order batter for the last seven years. He averages 41 in ODIs. The Rashid matchup at Kandy was his fourth in five months and the data going in showed Karunaratne struggling against the wrong'un — 14 runs off 24 balls with two dismissals.
Rashid set the trap early. His first delivery to Karunaratne in the 8th over was a stock leg-spinner that turned away. The second was the same. The third was the wrong'un — Karunaratne played for the leg-break, the ball turned in, and his stumps were broken.
Kusal Mendis fell in the next over to a wrong'un that he tried to sweep. The ball pitched outside leg and came in to hit middle-stump as he played around the line. Charith Asalanka, the captain, fell to Rashid in the 14th over for 19 — caught at slip off a perfect leg-spinner that took the edge.
The field-setting
Rashid's field at Kandy was the most aggressive he's used in an ODI for two years. Short midwicket and short cover up. Two slips for the right-handers. Deep midwicket and deep cover the only boundary riders. The off-side cordon was specifically for the leg-break that turns away from the bat and the deep midwicket was for the slog-sweep attempt.
The plan worked on Wanindu Hasaranga in the 25th over. Rashid bowled the stock leg-spinner outside off and Hasaranga tried to drive across the line. The edge went to slip. 145 for 6.
The Sri Lanka chase falling apart
Sri Lanka were 32 for 0 in the 8th over before Rashid came on. The next 10 overs went for 38 runs and Sri Lanka lost five wickets. By the 20th over they were 78 for 5 with the chase requirement at 9.0 an over and only the lower order to bat.
The fifth Rashid wicket was Dunith Wellalage in the 32nd over. The ball was a top-spinner that went straight on, took the leading edge as Wellalage played for the turn, and was caught at extra cover by Hashmatullah Shahidi.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for 156 in the 38th over. Afghanistan won by 100 runs and went 2-0 up in the three-match series.
What it means for Afghanistan
The 2-0 lead is Afghanistan's first away ODI series win against Sri Lanka. The previous record had been 1-3 across four series. The Kandy result confirms the Afghanistan attack has reached the maturity that the T20 side reached three years ago.
Rashid's ODI numbers will now lift in the rankings table. He was at world No. 9 in ODI bowlers before Kandy. The five-for moves him into the top six and possibly top three after the third ODI. The wrong'un as ODI wicket-taker is the technical change that will keep him there.
The forward view
The third ODI is at Colombo on May 19. Afghanistan will look to seal a 3-0 sweep. Sri Lanka have a top-order reshuffle to consider — Pathum Nissanka may be pushed up to open over Dimuth Karunaratne and Dasun Shanaka may be promoted to four.
The Asia Cup 2027 implications are also clear. Afghanistan are now the favourites to qualify alongside India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh from the qualifier path. Sri Lanka have a home Asia Cup to host in February 2027 and a top-order question to answer.
What to watch next: Sri Lanka's top-order reshuffle for the 3rd ODI at Colombo on May 19 — Pathum Nissanka to open is the call.
